A perfectly controlled performance — every note landed, every tempo rigidly kept — is Apollo triumphant, and audiences can feel the corpse of it. What moves us is the moment a voice almost breaks, a jazz soloist goes just slightly past the bar line, a guitar string bends into ambiguity. The 'flaw' is where the life entered.
