James's insight, when crossed with the Daoist philosopher Zhuangzi's concept of 'fasting the mind' (xin zhai — emptying mental chatter not to achieve blankness but to become receptive to the texture of experience), suggests something counterintuitive for the productivity-minded: the point of clearing mental load isn't efficiency. It's to recover access to the fringe — the peripheral quality of experience, the vague hum of being present to something before you've categorized it. If you've built elaborate systems so you can 'stop thinking about the work,' ask whether you've also stopped noticing. Today, pick one ordinary task and let its edges stay soft — don't resolve the experience into a checkbox.
